A bill imposing sanctions against Azerbaijan has been introduced in Congress.

US Congressmen Darrell Isa and Gus Bilirakis have introduced the “Preventing Escalation and Promoting Cooperation in the Caucasus” (PEACE Act) bill in the US House of Representatives.

The bill provides for the imposition of sanctions against Azerbaijan in the event of a resumption of aggressive actions against Armenia, aimed at supporting peace negotiations between the countries.

According to the sanctions section, if the US President determines that Azerbaijan is carrying out hostile actions against Armenia, he immediately provides appropriate approval to Congress.

️If, during the implementation of the joint declaration signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8, 2018, the Secretary of State determines that a person has knowingly attempted to disrupt or impede the successful conclusion of a peace agreement, the President may impose one or more sanctions on that person.

The bill will take effect 7 years from the date of adoption.

The draft law has been referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as the Judiciary and Financial Services Committees.
