German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Russia may be behind the drones that invaded the airspace of Germany and Denmark.
Radar Armenia spoke to political scientist Hovsep Khurshudyan on the topic.
-Some analysts assess this as a signal of a new security crisis in Europe. In your opinion, to what extent does this statement indicate a new stage of aggravation of relations between Russia and Germany, and what political or strategic calculations could be the basis of such an accusation?
-I am sure that it was the Kremlin that organized the flights of these drones over European countries, violating their airspace. This is a policy of intimidation, which, however, will have the opposite result. The ruling kleptocracy, criminal-oligarchic authorities of Russia, never understood the psychology of the dignified elites of the European countries facing them. They judge others through the prism of their own value system, but this always serves them poorly. Today, the societies of EU countries and their governments are ready to overcome even greater socio-economic difficulties to punish Russia and completely neutralize the Russian threat.
-Merz noted that the drones were not armed and mainly had reconnaissance purposes. What political or strategic message could be behind such actions?
-Even though European leaders, including Merz, are trying not to escalate the situation and respond as gently as possible to Russian sabotage, this does not mean that they are not taking steps to prevent Russian adventures in the future. Legislative changes have already been initiated in Germany, which will allow such drones to be shot down from now on, regardless of whether they are used for strike or reconnaissance purposes. Currently, German law does not permit this. Additionally, more funds will be allocated to enhance defense capabilities, and this will also encourage EU countries to provide greater financial and military assistance to Ukraine.
