We have made a strategic decision that our next nuclear reactor will be a small modular one. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced during the NA-government question-and-answer session.
He noted that they had a multifaceted discussion with partner countries and made that decision. “We asked our partners, who have or may have such technology, would you mind if we discussed this topic with others? Everyone said no.”
Pashinyan noted that they are currently seeking proposals. “We have similar conversations with the US, Russia, China, South Korea, and France.”
The Prime Minister noted that they do not include a political component. “We say, in terms of commercial and economic profitability, which proposal is beneficial to us; let’s make a choice accordingly.”
According to Pashinyan, they should make a decision and sign an agreement in the next one to two years. “Making that decision and signing the agreement will not have a geopolitical or foreign policy context, because we want a small nuclear reactor, and we want it at the best price, with the safest technology, and with the shortest possible payback period for its investment.” At the end of his speech, he asked not to look for geopolitical contexts. “I ask that no one look for geopolitics in this.”
