Today marks the 2nd anniversary of the Azerbaijani attack on Nagorno-Karabakh. On September 19, 2023, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Azerbaijani armed forces launched large-scale military operations against Artsakh. The military attack was accompanied by ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population.
At the initial stage of the attack, the Azerbaijani army used massive rocket and artillery fire, followed by the use of drones. In parallel, intense fighting broke out in the interposition sections of the line of contact. According to reports, military facilities were selected as the primary targets. The Artsakh Defense Army fought heavy battles in different directions of the front, and in several sections, the advance of the Azerbaijani army was stopped by intensive fire. However, Azerbaijan managed to defeat Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian side suffered more than 200 casualties, of which 20 were civilians and children.
The attack was preceded by false information spread by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry about mine-laying and sabotage operations. On the same day, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry issued a statement stating that “local anti-terrorist measures are being launched in the area of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Artsakh to restore constitutional order.”
The Nagorno-Karabakh authorities stated that Azerbaijan aims to carry out ethnic cleansing of Armenians and is pursuing a genocidal policy towards Artsakh.
The fire ceased only on September 20, when the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities accepted Baku’s demand to lay down their arms, which was transmitted through the Russian peacekeeping mission stationed in Karabakh.
