The President of the Republic of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, today received the European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, who is on her first visit to Armenia.

Welcoming the guest, the President noted, "Your visit is important because since August 8, a significant change has occurred in our reality. Today, when we celebrate the 34th anniversary of our independence, we have the opportunity to live a full and peaceful life. We have made significant progress on this path, also thanks to the EU's support. In recent years, our cooperation has been particularly close, with a logic aimed at establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the region. The support and assistance that the EU provides to Armenia are appreciated."

In turn, Commissioner Marta Kos expressed her gratitude for the reception, adding: "It is an honor to begin my first visit to Armenia with a meeting with you on the eve of the important day when you celebrate the 34th anniversary of your country's independence. I congratulate you, your staff, and your people. What you have already achieved, and our desire on the part of the EU to continue to stand by you in these efforts, is of historic importance."

During the meeting, issues related to the Armenia-European Union multifaceted partnership were discussed. The parties touched upon the opportunities for expanding cooperation, especially in the energy sector, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Armenia's energy security and developing renewable energy.

The interlocutors also highlighted the programs aimed at developing local capacities, particularly the "Resistance and Support" joint initiative being implemented in Syunik, which is a significant contribution to the socio-economic stability and development of the region.

Both sides highly appreciated the humanitarian assistance provided by the EU to Armenia in recent years. In this context, it was noted that the EU's support for the implementation of democratic reforms, strengthening institutional capacities, and ensuring the rule of law significantly contributes to the establishment of Armenia's democratic system and the comprehensive development of society.
