What happened in Washington on August 8 is actually the end of the confrontation and a way out of the deadlock. Ilham Aliyev stated this in an interview with Al Arabiya.
“So, the negotiations, as I said, lasted for several years and ended in Washington with the great support of President Trump and his team. In fact, I believe this marks the end of the conflict, the conclusion of the war. Officially, the peace agreement was not signed for one specific reason. There is still a provision in the Armenian constitution that calls into question the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
So, they will make an amendment. As soon as this amendment to the constitution is made and territorial claims against Azerbaijan are removed, the official peace agreement will be signed,” Aliyev said.
According to him, the initialing in the presence of President Trump marked the end of the war. Peace opens up new opportunities for the South Caucasus region and the broader regions of Central Asia and the Middle East.
