Armenia and Azerbaijan to sign a memorandum of understanding in Washington. Middle East Eye

Azerbaijan and Armenia are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding in Washington on Friday, pledging to pursue peace, Middle East Eye reported, citing sources.

The newspaper’s sources said that US President Donald Trump will host Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at a signing ceremony at the White House.

“The two leaders are expected to sign a ‘Memorandum of Intent’, not a draft peace agreement, which would provide Trump with the diplomatic achievement he sought in the region last month,” the newspaper wrote.

It is noteworthy that, according to Middle East Eye, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov called his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan on Monday to inform him about the summit. It should be noted that Turkish Foreign Ministry sources had reported that Fidan discussed bilateral and regional issues with Bayramov.

“One of the main obstacles remains the “Zangezur Corridor”, which would connect Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhichevan through Armenian territory. Armenia rejects the term “Zangezur Corridor”, claiming that it carries irredentist implications for its sovereign territory of Syunik,” the newspaper writes.
