The shared border between Iran and Armenia is a historic communication route between the two peoples, and Tehran will not allow any encroachment on that border.
According to ISNA, this was stated by Iranian Defense Minister Amir Aziz Nasirzadeh during a meeting with his Armenian counterpart Suren Papikyan. He emphasized the strategic importance of relations between the two countries and stated:
“Iran’s principled policy is to strengthen relations with all neighbors, especially Armenia, and no obstacle can hinder this path.”
Nasirzadeh, who supported the peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia, emphasized that Iran supported the signing of peace treaties and was ready to accelerate this process.
He added: “Lasting peace in the Caucasus will create enormous opportunities for regional development.”
Referring to the recent meetings between Prime Minister Pashinyan and the Iranian leadership, the Defense Minister stated: “Iran attaches special importance to the development of relations with Armenia, and cooperation will continue based on mutual interests and regardless of pressure from foreign powers.”
In another part of his speech, Amir Nasirzadeh discussed the presence of extra-regional powers in the Caucasus and added, “The countries of the region must develop regional security. External intervention will only increase instability.”
