We have not yet received Yerevan's application for EU membership. Marta Kos (Liberty)

"We have not yet received an application for membership in the European Union from Armenia; we will discuss it when we do," said Marta Kos, the commissioner for enlargement, in an exclusive interview with Azatutyun.

Without specifying whether Brussels will approve the application, the senior European diplomat only emphasized that this desire voiced in Yerevan shows how attractive the European family is today.

"What happened in the Armenian parliament shows that the attractiveness of the European Union is higher now than before. For any country to apply for membership in the European Union, there are two conditions: it must be a state and be in Europe. We have not yet received an application from Armenia. We will discuss it when we receive it, but, as I said, this shows that we are interested in many countries," Marta Kos noted.

Last month, Armenia's parliament adopted a bill to launch the EU membership process. At the same time, official Yerevan states that although the bill is consistent with the program for deepening relations with the European Union and Armenia's balanced foreign policy, it is not an application for EU membership. "To submit that application, Armenia must go through several procedures, and we will consider them when available," Marta Kos told RFE/RL.
