It was the first step in the implementation of the inalienable right to existence of the Republic of Armenia

President Vahagn Khachaturyan's congratulatory message on the adoption of the Declaration of Independence of Armenia.

"Dear citizens of the Republic of Armenia,

On this day thirty-four years ago, Armenia's recent history was supplemented by a reality that would become the starting point for the rebirth of our statehood and state after a centuries-long hiatus: the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration of Independence signaled the beginning of a new cycle, the logical continuation and end point of which was the Independence Referendum held on September 21, 1991.

However, the Declaration is not a one-time document but a much more multi-content and symbolic pillar, which was to become a landmark for realizing our people's centuries-old wishes and dreams to build an independent and sovereign state. This is what the spirit of the Declaration, which is not limited by its 12 principles, aims at, and thus, this most important document for our statehood is more vibrant, flexible, and up-to-date.

The Declaration of Independence was the first step in implementing the Republic of Armenia's inalienable right to exist on the political map of the world and confirmed the commitment to build a free, democratic, legal, and prosperous state.

Dear compatriots,

The Declaration of Independence, apart from being a symbol of the rebirth of our statehood and an important document, is a supreme responsibility for all of us. It is an essential program for the organization of the state and public life of our country, which defines our priorities: establishment of state institutions, equality of all before the law, increase in the fighting ability of the army, creation of a competitive education system and economy, provision of fundamental freedoms and rights of man and citizen.

I congratulate all of us on the 34th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia."
