Hakob Arshakyan emphasized the need to release all prisoners

On January 29, Hakob Arshakyan, RA NA Deputy Speaker and member of the RA NA delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, received the delegation led by the General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong.

Delegation members Hasmik Hakobyan and Tsovinar Vardanyan participated in the meeting. Hakob Arshakyan presented regional developments and existing challenges to the guests. The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly referred to the events in the region and the consequences of the large-scale attack on Azerbaijan on September 19, 2023.

Referring to the peace treaty negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the NA deputy speaker detailed the fundamental principles acceptable to the Armenian side. Issues related to the process of exchanging prisoners and other detained persons in Azerbaijan and the preservation of Armenian historical and cultural values in Nagorno-Karabakh were discussed.

Hakob Arshakyan emphasized the need to release all prisoners and detainees. Appreciating the efforts of international partners in promoting the dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Hakob Arshakyan also valued Martin Chungong's activities in this regard.

Issues related to holding the 10th Conference of Young Deputies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union were discussed. Hakob Arshakyan proposed to hold the event in September in Yerevan.

Tsovinar Vardanyan emphasized that the Armenian side is ready to advance the peace agenda and work in that direction despite the challenges. In this context, he emphasized the dialogue between the parties.

Hasmik Hakobyan expressed hope that his proposal regarding selecting the theme for the 10th Conference of Young Deputies will be accepted in Geneva. The Armenian delegate offered to discuss the role of young people in the peace process, taking into account the current situation in the world.

Martin Chungong highly appreciated Armenia's willingness to engage in effective dialogue regarding relations with Azerbaijan. He noted that they will make efforts to contribute to the peace process during their visit to Baku.

The General Secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union referred to the issue of cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh, the process of exchange of prisoners.
