The President of the Republic, Vahagn Khachaturyan, received the delegation led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
Welcoming the guest, the president specifically said: "First of all, I want to emphasize the fraternal relations of the Anglican and Apostolic Churches and highly appreciate them. These relationships are significant to us. The Apostolic Church has its unique place and role in our lives, and the cooperation of the two churches is aimed at strengthening the friendship of our people. I also do not doubt that your visit will contribute to developing diplomatic and political relations between our countries."
Archbishop Justin Welby thanked them for the reception and noted that he was happy for the opportunity to visit Armenia and strengthen the friendship between the two churches and peoples.
During the meeting, the current security challenges in the region and questions regarding protecting the rights of our compatriots forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh due to the military operations unleashed by Azerbaijan and the humanitarian crisis created were discussed.
President Vahagn Khachaturyan drew the archbishop's attention to the issues of protection of the thousand-year-old Armenian and Christian cultural heritage in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and emphasized that only thanks to the active steps of the international community, including the Anglican Church, it will be possible to avoid atrocities against these monuments and their potential destruction.
The perspectives and directions for promoting Armenian-British cooperation were also discussed during the conversation.
