Today is Armenia's independence day

Today is September 21, the Independence Day of Armenia.

On August 23, 1990, the Supreme Council of the ASSR adopted the Declaration of Independence. On this day in 1991, an independence referendum was held in Armenia.

The overwhelming majority of participants voted in favor of the question, "Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia should be an independent and democratic state outside of the USSR?"

Out of 2 million 163 thousand 967 people who had the right to participate in the referendum, 2 million 56 thousand 792 participated in the vote, that is, 95.5% of the citizens. 2 million 42 thousand 617 people (99.56%) voted for the country's independence, only 0.46% voted against it.
