On February 20-27, the working group led by Ravindran Daniel visited Armenia to discuss the issue of using UN mercenaries to violate human rights and hinder the realization of people's rights to self-determination.
The working group's visit was to study Armenia's legal framework after ratifying the "International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing, and Training of Mercenaries" and the measures taken to implement the convention.
From February 20 to 22, the working group met with various RA departments. Then the group representatives went on a working visit to Kapan in the Syunik region. They met with the governor of Syunik and the representatives of the Kapan office of the Defender of Human Rights.
Within the framework of the visit, the Working Group on Tenant Issues also met with civil society representatives.
On February 27, a final meeting was held at the RA MFA. The working group presented information on the work done within the framework of the visit, as well as preliminary assessments and recommendations.
During the summary meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Vahe Gevorgyan noted that mercenaries and their dangers are regional, as evidenced by the 2020 Extensive use of mercenaries by Azerbaijan during the war unleashed against the people of Nagorno Karabakh. It was noted that the involvement of international actors, including relevant structures of the United Nations, is necessary to deal with regional threats.
An agreement was reached to continue and deepen cooperation within the mandate of the UN Working Group on Tenants.
