US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried stated during the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that Armenia and Azerbaijan have a historic opportunity to establish long-term peace.
She noted that although there were setbacks in the form of combat clashes on September 13-14, a ceasefire was established with the intervention of the US. According to Donfried, this situation was a reminder of the importance of reaching a comprehensive agreement.
"We continue to encourage Armenia and Azerbaijan to maintain the pace of negotiations; we do this in close cooperation with the EU and other partners. Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan also corresponds to the interests of international security," she emphasized.
Donfried also emphasized that our bilateral relations with Armenia have never been stronger. She noted that the United States should continue looking for ways to expand ties in security and deepen cooperation in democratic and economic development.
