Gagik Melkonyan, deputy of the "Civil Contract" faction of the National Assembly, stated that the significant powers demanded Armenia to sign a peace agreement by the end of the year.
He says, "The goal is to sign a peace agreement by the end of the year, but no one knows whether it will happen or not. The major powers have told us that you must conclude that agreement by the end of the year. But after Luxembourg, Aliyev stood up and said in Astana that Russia stopped the war and began to reconcile; it is clear from all this that we are unlikely to sign a peace treaty by the end of the year."
Melkonyan also said that the authorities want to have our country with the borders established during the establishment of the CIS in 1991 and to conclude peace. "We're going for it; we have nothing to give up."
He spoke about the upcoming Pashinyan-Putin-Aliev meeting, noting that he has no expectations from it. "Who said it would happen? They told you from the Kremlin; they didn't tell us anything. If there were a meeting, it would be in Astana. Why didn't that meeting happen, whatever the meeting was? In other words, if the Russian king wanted to organize a meeting there, he would have organized it, but he didn't want to. Now, if he invites us officially, we will see. I have no expectations because if you listened to Aliyev's last statements in Astana, he said: if there is no "corridor," I will take it differently. His feet touched the ground; it felt good. When he comes to Brussels, he already talks differently; the approaches are different; it is different in Russia, like a fish in water in his homeland. And when he goes to Brussels, he sits with his head down," said the deputy.
He referred to the consequences of the latest Azerbaijani aggression. According to Melkonyan, Azerbaijan occupied an area of 40 square kilometers from the territory of Armenia. During the events of Jermuk on September 13, these areas were increased by another 60 square kilometers. "I was on the eastern border seven days ago and saw that the engineering works in our positions are almost 80 percent completed, and our troops are in new positions. The priority has changed. There was no retreat; they attacked and occupied our territories. We sacrificed so much; we fought until the end."
