Why, through the territory of Armenia, who are the primary beneficiaries of the corridor, and why a passage, not a road? Armtimes.com

Armtimes.com has provided details about ongoing discussions on unblocking regional economic and transport channels.

"After the 44-day war, according to the joint statement of November 9, all economic and transport channels should be unblocked in the region.

However, months ago, Azerbaijan has not yet responded to the RA government's proposal to open three checkpoints on the Armenia-Azerbaijani border. And this is the case when the tripartite statement of November 9 does not even mention it; on the contrary, it talks about unblocking the roads.

And why precisely a corridor and not a road? Why exactly through the territory of Armenia, and who are the primary beneficiaries of the passage?

Azerbaijan primary of the main beneficiaries of the corridor through the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia.

The corridor will allow Azerbaijan to:

- carry out cargo transportation on the Azerbaijan-Nakhijevan-Turkey route under the most favorable conditions

- to have control over cargo passing through the land territory of Armenia from Iran

- to use as a sensitive topic to aggravate the internal political situation and public sentiments of RA

- Azerbaijan has undisguised ambitions for Syunik as well; the corridor is the first step to creating a legitimate basis for the return of Azerbaijanis to those areas.

In the case of a road through the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, the cargo transportation will be controlled by the Republic of Armenia, and Azerbaijan, as a transit zone, will have to pay taxes to Armenia for vehicles, which is in no way acceptable to Azerbaijan. Because the Azerbaijani side refused even to use the air space of Armenia for years, and only because it does not have to pay taxes. Azerbaijan does not need an economically developed Armenia.

Azerbaijan can get a road and railway through the territory of Iran. Still, Iran will never give a corridor to Azerbaijan, and neither will Armenia. Still, Azerbaijan is trying to get the hall from Armenia by force, which is much less likely to succeed in the case of Iran.

Another of the primary beneficiaries of the corridor through the territory of Armenia is Turkey.

The corridor will allow Turkey to:

- Ensuring unhindered communication with the Turkish world

- Blocking the road to the prospect of a possible gas pipeline from Iran through the territory of Armenia to Europe

In the case of a road through the sovereign territory of Armenia, both Azerbaijani and Turkish cargo transportation will be controlled by Armenia, and they will have to pay taxes to Armenia. As a result, Armenia will have an even more developed economy, and Armenia's role and importance in the region will become more critical. And all this is not desirable for Azerbaijan and Turkey, to put it mildly.

Russia is also one of the primary beneficiaries of the corridor through the territory of Armenia.

The corridor will allow Russia to:

- have an impact on cargo transportation from Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan and Turkey

- to have an impact on cargo passing through the land territory of Armenia from Iran

- to have additional levers on RA and Azerbaijan and control the most critical intersection of east-west roads.

After the special operation started against Ukraine, after the sanctions applied by the West and the USA against Russia, Russia is trying to find a market for both export and import. In this case, Turkey playing on two strings with the West and Russia is an ideal option; it remains to establish a land connection with Turkey. In this context, the role of Turkey and Azerbaijan in the region has increased, and now Azerbaijan can become a platform for Russia to export gas and oil to the West.

As much as Russian official platforms try to deny the participation of Russia in opening a corridor through the sovereign territory of Armenia, Russia's ambitions, the facts show otherwise. First, the inaction of the Russian Federation and the CSTO against the Azerbaijani military that invaded the sovereign territory of Armenia, the non-fulfillment of the obligations to supply arms to Armenia, the inertness of the Russian troops stationed in Armenia, the aggressiveness of the Azerbaijani forces of Russia's ally on the Armenian border.

By the way, whether Azerbaijan, Turkey, or Russia is in favor of the corridor through the territory of Armenia being under Russian control.

Russia has several options to get a corridor through the territory of Armenia.

Russia's ally Azerbaijan weakens Armenia with military escalation to the extent that Armenia is forced to join the Union States or the Russian Federation.

As a result of the escalation, Russia's ally Azerbaijan managed to take a corridor from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia to Nakhichevan, the control of which will be carried out by the Russian Federation in the future.
