For the first time, an American-Armenian was elected to the Los Angeles City Council President position

Paul Krekorian was elected president of the Los Angeles City Council today, becoming the first Armenian-American to assume that position.

Krekorian replaces the former chairman of the political council, Nuri Martinez, who was forced to resign because he made racist remarks with two other council members while discussing the processes related to the city in the video.

Krekorian was immediately assigned to head the political council during the controversial period. Council members Kevin de Leon and Gilles Zedillo continue to face the threat of resigning after the publication of the scandalous video.

Mayor Eric Garcetti highly appreciated the election of Paul Krekorian. "Paul is a dedicated and conscientious leader who can take a sensible, collaborative, and effective approach at a painful time when Los Angeles citizens deserve reliable leadership on the City Council. I am sure that he will form a leadership team."
