EU High Commissioner for Foreign Relations Josep Borrell responded to the letter of the Council of Europe deputies and emphasized that the European Union will continue its involvement at the highest levels to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
"I fully share your concerns about the seriousness of the situation. The armed clashes that took place at the beginning of August and on September 13-14 show that the situation in the region remains highly fragile. The EU has called at the highest level to stop hostilities.
The President of the European Council continues to be in close contact with the leaders of both Armenia and Azerbaijan. He established contact with the foreign ministers of both countries. He instructed the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Georgia crisis to hold immediate consultations in Yerevan and Baku.
The EU urged both sides to strictly observe the ceasefire and called on the Azerbaijani forces to immediately return to their positions by the last administrative borders of the former Soviet Socialist Republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan. The EU also encourages both sides to make progress on demarcation and boundary, which is essential in reducing the risk of further clashes," said European Commission Vice-President, High Commissioner for External Relations Josep Borrell.
