Months ago, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the executive and legislative authorities and representatives of the political society regarding the modernization of the media sphere development policy in the Republic of Armenia and the reform of the legislation regulating the activities of the media. The reforms to be implemented with joint efforts will improve the information field in the country. This was stated by Sisak Gabrielyan, the chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth, and Sports, during a meeting with Martina Schmidt, head of the Council of Europe office in Yerevan.
The meeting took place on September 26, in which the head of the cooperation department on freedom of speech, Ardita Abdiu, and the international expert Christina Rozgoni also participated.
According to the presentation of Sisak Gabrielyan, in the five-year plan of the Government, which the parliament approved, a separate section refers to the regulations of the media field.
Martina Schmidt thanked the commission's chairman for providing the opportunity for the meeting. He highlighted similar conferences and discussions with the commission's chairman to reform the media sphere legislation.
Ardita Abdiu presented to Sisak Gabrielyan the study's results on "Media freedom, freedom of expression, the domestic legal framework regulating public media and its compliance with the Council of Europe" within the assessment framework of the needs of the media field of Armenia.
According to Sisak Gabrielyan, online media's influence is increasing yearly. He noted that, unfortunately, there are no clear regulations in this regard in RA. The commission's chairman emphasized that the rules should be such that they do not harm but serve the freedom of speech.
An agreement was reached to organize joint discussions aimed at reforms in the media sphere.
