On September 2, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, received the Deputy Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations Miroslav Yencha. Minister Mirzoyan emphasized that the visit of the Deputy UN Security Council is an excellent opportunity to discuss the developments in the South Caucasus and the prospects of the UN's involvement in addressing the existing problems.
The interlocutors exchanged ideas on several issues related to RA-UN cooperation. The activities carried out between the UN and Armenia in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals were highlighted. The meeting also touched upon several matters of regional and international importance.
Ararat Mirzoyan presented Armenia's position on the processes aimed at establishing stability and peace in the region. RA Foreign Minister emphasized that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should receive its comprehensive and long-term settlement in the framework of the co-chairmanship of the OSCE Minsk Group, the only format with a mediation mandate from the international community.
Referring to the humanitarian problems that arose in Nagorno-Karabakh after the 44-day war, Minister Mirzoyan emphasized the need for the rampant involvement of relevant UN bodies on the ground, also following the principle of "ignoring no one" of the UN. Minister Mirzoyan emphasized the importance of the return of the Armenian prisoners of war held by Azerbaijan, clarifying the fates of the missing persons and the forcibly disappeared.
