- In your opinion, why have Russian-Azerbaijani relations been tense lately?
- Russian-Azerbaijani relations are tense because Azerbaijan has begun to pose a threat to the national security of the Russian Federation. Also, information is being spread in the federal media of the Russian Federation that representatives of the Azerbaijani community were involved in this recent major terrorist act that took place in Russia, and that the Ukrainian special services attacked strategic aviation. For this reason, the Russian side has felt the need to take appropriate actions against the Azerbaijani community, especially criminal representatives. This, in turn, prompts a reaction from Azerbaijan, which is logical; however, there are deeper issues at play, related to the mismatch between more global regional interests.
Azerbaijan serves as a proxy for Great Britain and Turkey in our region, and its activities as a proxy state should have, at some point, begun to pose a threat to Russia and Iran; now that moment has arrived. It is simply that all these incidents, as well as this act of terrorism, the arrest of "Russian journalists" and representatives of the Azerbaijani community in Azerbaijan on Russian territory, all this has contributed to the straining of relations. They are states with deep-seated geopolitical problems; at some point, all this had to manifest itself.
- Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow hopes that this situation will be resolved. Will this situation be resolved?
- Peskov also gives the same assessments regarding relations with Armenia, that they hope that the existing problems between Armenia and Russia will also be resolved at some stage, they continue to insist, for example, the recent statements, when we analyze, when they say that Armenia aims or imagines Armenia to be a member of the European Union in 20 years and other similar statements, there was another assessment of similar content from Peskov. According to him, they evaluate Armenia and the Armenian people, and so on. There is a Russian formulation - "дежурная выражения", which is more like that, behind which the real approach of the Russian side to the current situation is not hidden. The problems are deep, and they should have been reflected in the relations between Russia and Azerbaijan at some point; a settlement is expected.
