The Constitutional Reform Council has not yet discussed the declaration of independence, Council member Daniel Ioannisyan said in an interview with Radar Armenia, considering it likely that the issue will be discussed soon.
- What stage does the constitutional committee work at?
- The Constitutional Reform Council convened its last session in September of last year. At the same time, there has been a slight change in the work on constitutional reforms. Now, the Ministry of Justice is preparing proposals, which will be discussed section by section in the council and the public.
- The Prime Minister noted that, in his opinion, the Declaration of Independence should be removed from the Constitution. Has the committee discussed such an issue before?
- There has not been any discussion on the Declaration of Independence in the council, but I think there will be. Taking into account public speeches, it will probably become a subject of discussion.
- Serzh Sargsyan recently expressed the opinion that the issue will not reach a referendum, and the authorities will not be able to remove the declaration of independence from the constitution. In your opinion, is the public ready for this change?
First, it has not yet been decided that it will be removed. Second, we will discuss it. If the public is against it, it will not be adopted. Isn't it Serzh Sargsyan's time for a referendum to be falsified?
- What means does the opposition have to prevent this?
- But why do they want there to be no referendum? It is strange when someone says, "I don't want a referendum." During the referendum, the people will decide whether they want it. Maybe they suspect that the people want one thing, and they want something else. In my opinion, there is a need for a new constitution. There is a need for the people to eventually adopt a new constitution, to adopt it without falsifications.
