Radar Armenia's interlocutor is journalist and philological sciences candidate Arman Galoyan, with whom we discussed the role of artificial intelligence in journalism.
- In recent months, active competition has begun between artificial intelligence programs. These programs have also started to be used in journalism. What consequences do you think AI can have in the field of journalism?
- Indeed, if ChatGPT has been spreading for about a year, a real boom has begun in this field in the last month. Since the beginning of the year, we have witnessed a race of new artificial intelligence programs. At the end of January, the Chinese DeepSeek was announced. Then, new ones appear, and the neural networks that existed before are further improving their capabilities and making many services free. Now, the OpenAI company, the creator of ChatGPT, and DeepSeek are competing; xAI has already announced the launch of Grok-3, promising to be the most powerful in the field. This is a genuinely fierce race in this area, which will expand opportunities, and users will benefit from this. After all, what is commonplace for us today was difficult to imagine ten to fifteen years ago.
As for using artificial intelligence programs in journalism, AI has become an indispensable assistant in all areas, including journalism. First, converting voice to text is an excellent help for a journalist. In addition, artificial intelligence has made it easier to edit texts and generate and translate the text itself. It is an indispensable help in analyzing and classifying data, especially when dealing with huge or difficult-to-digest documents, such as statistical bulletins, legal acts, etc. Artificial intelligence programs have accelerated video editing, and new opportunities for image generation have been created. The new capabilities of advanced versions of artificial intelligence programs may not be very noticeable in our profession now; for example, programmers will testify to these changes. But all this plays a significant role in our profession. I often resort to the help of artificial intelligence because it dramatically helps save time and facilitates work.
- However, all this also has its challenges.
- Yes, you are right. In this matter, I would first like to draw attention to the ethical side of the issue, so it is necessary to emphasize that artificial intelligence programs created the text or photo.
And then, which is very important, artificial intelligence programs, at least in our field, should be treated as assistants, not replacements for journalists or editors. It can help you, but it cannot work for you. And then, you should always double-check the information it provides, although these programs themselves can "fact-check." But, still, no matter how "superpowerful" technology and artificial intelligence may seem, they cannot surpass human intelligence and brain power. They cannot replace your imagination, language games, or stylistic skills. So, artificial intelligence programs are our great, irreplaceable helpers, but never a replacement for humans.
