Interview

When the time comes, the US will instruct Ankara to open the border

Radar Armenia's interlocutor is Shahan Gantaharyan, an international scholar.

- How would you interpret the recent statements made by the President of Azerbaijan to Armenia? What was the purpose of such talk if, on the other hand, the parties were negotiating a peace treaty?

- Negotiations and Aliyev's compromises always go in the opposite direction. His threats torpedoed the peace process. It proposes two main tasks: the "Zangezur Corridor" and the cancellation of the OSCE Minsk Co-Chairship. The rest are derivatives and pressure cards.

- Aliyev announced that "Zangezur Corridor" should and will be opened. Does this mean that Azerbaijan intends to resort to armed force?

- I don't think he will get permission to solve the problem with weapons. Syunik has appeared in geopolitics, and Azerbaijan cannot solve this problem alone. Even the Moscow-Ankara agreement is not enough to change Syunik's status. Here, not only Tehran but also the collective West has been involved in these processes.

- There was no reaction to Aliyev's words by the international community, neither from the Russian Federation nor the West. How will you interpret it?

- They do not take Aliyev's demands seriously and understand that they are a provocation, pressure to create a favorable environment around the target, the Zangezur Corridor, and the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.

- I would also like to address Armenia's response to Aliyev's statements. The comments of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs were heard.

- Naturally, I am dissatisfied with the Armenian side's reaction. Baku's answer is an attempt to roll the ball into the Armenian half.

- The Turkish Foreign Minister also announced that "a historic window of opportunities for stable peace, stability, and prosperity has been created in the region" and that Turkey is moving shoulder to shoulder with Azerbaijan. Is peace in the region beneficial to Turkey, and this case, will it force Azerbaijan to go along with it?

- Ankara's statements are mixed and ambiguous. The formula "One nation, two states" is just a slogan somewhere. Aliyev accuses Yerevan of being destructive, while Fidan considers official Yerevan's approaches encouraging. Ankara is waiting for a political moment. It will be at the behest of the West. No matter how interconnected the processes are, once Ankara is instructed to open the border, it cannot continue to be interconnected with the Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations. After the border's opening, the existence of Russian military bases in Armenia will be discussed and questioned. And it will be directed directly from Washington. From a Western perspective, the establishment of peace and the actual motives of the agreements that will be made ahead of it should be perceived by the expulsion of the Russian factor.
