New Year in Turkey (Yelbas)
In Turkey's major cities, the New Year is celebrated with pomp, combining European secular traditions with national customs: Christmas trees, concerts, fireworks, and the local Santa Claus - Noel Baba. The national lottery Milli Piyango is held. Pomegranates are also broken for good luck. In the villages, the holiday is more modest, while in tourist areas it is more vivid to attract guests.
