The new "Avatar" hits screens with $345 million

The third installment in James Cameron's Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has grossed $345 million at the global box office in its opening weekend, the second-biggest opening of 2025.

The film grossed $88 million in the United States and Canada and another $257 million internationally. The only movie to have a bigger opening this year is Zootopia 2.

While the new film's opening is lagging behind its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, experts say Avatar's success is due not to its quick start but to its long run. The upcoming holiday season and positive audience reviews have helped the film earn an "A" rating.

The film cost more than $400 million to make, and its box-office success is crucial to the next Avatar installments. The film was most successful in China, where its opening-day grosses surpassed those of the previous two installments.
