Starmer and Mamdani pressure FIFA to reduce World Cup ticket prices

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani have joined the outcry from football fans, demanding that FIFA review the “star-studded” ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup.

Fans have criticized FIFA for its “dynamic pricing” policy, which sets ticket prices to fluctuate with demand. The cheapest tickets cost more than $100, while the minimum price for the final was set at $4,185.

Keir Starmer welcomed some ticket price cuts but called for more to be done to ensure the tournament “doesn’t lose touch with its true fans.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also announced the appointment of a special “World Cup czar” to fight for price reductions ahead of matches in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Under pressure, FIFA announced the creation of special $60 tickets for the most loyal fans of national federations. However, this accounts for only 1.6% of the total tickets, which the group Football Supporters Europe described as insufficient.
