One of Peter Carl Fabergé's most magnificent creations, the Winter Egg, was auctioned in London for a record £22.9 million ($30.2 million). It was made in 1913 at the order of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, as an Easter gift for his mother, Empress Maria Feodorovna.
This unique piece is made of rock crystal, engraved on the inside with patterns, and decorated with platinum snowflakes and diamonds on the outside. The Winter Egg is considered one of Fabergé's most famous and technically complex works.
Its sale at auction surpassed Fabergé's previous world record of £8.9 million, paid for the "Rothschild Egg" in 2007. This is the third time that the same egg has set a new record at auction. For decades, the egg has passed from hand to hand, attracting the attention of many people, and was even considered lost for a time.
