Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's 1940 self-portrait (El sueño / "The Dream") sold for $54.7 million at an auction in New York, becoming the most expensive work by a woman. The auction lasted just four minutes.
The purchase price surpasses Georgia O'Keeffe's previous record of $44.4 million and is considered a new record for Latin American art. Kahlo's last painting, "Diego y Yo," sold for $34.9 million.
