The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has announced that it has lost contact with the Akatsuki spacecraft, the last active mission to study Venus.
Akatsuki was launched in 2010 to study the planet’s atmosphere and climate. Despite an initial failure to enter Venus’ orbit, five years later, in 2015, the spacecraft succeeded on a second attempt, using only small thrusters.
