NASA’s TESS space telescope has discovered three Earth-sized planets orbiting not one but two suns. It’s reminiscent of the famous scene in the Star Wars movie, when Luke Skywalker watches the double sunset of Tatooine.
Scientists say that this binary star system, called TOI-2267, is located about 190 light-years from Earth and challenges several previously held scientific beliefs. Until now, it was thought that the formation of planets in such binary systems was almost impossible due to strong gravitational instability. However, in the case of TOI-2267, three stable planets were found, two of which orbit the first star and the third orbits the second.
This system could help to reveal how rocky planets form and survive in such harsh conditions.
