Rome’s historic Caffè Greco, which dates back to the 18th century, has finally been evicted from its tenants after a lengthy legal battle.
The dispute began in 2017 when a lease expired. For years, the owners—the Israelite Hospital of Rome—and the managers have been at odds over stolen paintings, contracts, and other issues.
The café will now temporarily close for a reopening and renovation. The owners are looking for new, forward-thinking managers who can preserve the café’s unique old interior while providing quality service.
In recent years, the café has been known for its exorbitant prices (cappuccinos cost up to €14) and catered mainly to tourists.
