Nature has created a new wonder in northern Alaska. NASA satellite images have revealed the existence of an entirely new island formed by a melting glacier. The island was formed in Alsek Lake, where the Alsek Glacier has been retreating for decades, filling the lake with meltwater. Two satellite images, taken on July 5, 1984, by the TM instrument on Landsat 5, and on August 6, 2025, by the OLI-2 instrument on Landsat 9, clearly show how the glacier’s retreat has radically changed the landscape over time.
