Asteroids could be the primary source of Earth's oceans. Ryugu samples reveal the secret

A new study has revealed that liquid water existed on the progenitor body of the asteroid Ryugu much later than scientists previously thought. The discovery came from studying samples collected by Japan’s Hayabusa 2 probe. The rocky particles, smaller than a grain of rice, were returned to Earth on December 5, 2020.

Ryugu and similar carbonaceous asteroids formed around the birth of the planets, about 4.6 billion years ago, when ice and dust were gathering around the comet. For this reason, such bodies are considered “fossil memories” of the early solar system.
