The LIGO gravitational wave observatory in the United States is celebrating its 10th anniversary by detecting one of the most powerful signals in the universe. The discovery not only confirms predictions by Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking, but also provides an unprecedentedly clear picture of the true nature of black holes. The newly detected signal, GW250114, was so strong that scientists described it as “a whisper that turned into a scream.” It was created by the collision of two black holes, each about 32 times the mass of the Sun.
