New scientific studies show that the Martian core is much more irregular and chaotic than scientists previously imagined. If until now it was compared to a layer cake, now it is more reminiscent of “rocky” chocolate: tangled, uneven, and full of ancient debris.
Scientists believe that this debris was formed during the earliest period of Mars, when the planet collided with massive, planet-sized bodies.
On Earth, such debris would not last long; tectonic plates constantly mix layers of magma. In the case of Mars, however, the situation is different. Using seismic data, scientists are now able to “look” into the depths of 4.5 billion years.
