Excellent shot: The bright Perseid asteroids

Photographer Osama Fathi has captured an incredible sight: the bright streaks of the Perseid meteor shower streak across the Milky Way galaxy above the ruins of an ancient Egyptian settlement.

The photo was taken on August 12 at the archaeological site of Sokhnopayu Nessus, located north of Lake Qarun in the Faiyum Oasis, Egypt, as the 2025 Perseid meteor shower reached its peak. Although the bright light of the waning Moon dimmed the meteor shower, the brightest meteors remained visible, providing a dazzling show.

The scene was created by combining several photos: the sky and Our Path were captured with a 25-second exposure using a Nikon Z6 camera and a 14-24mm wide-angle lens. In contrast, the meteors were captured with a shorter exposure and a high ISO setting of 8,000.
