The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" continues to break records and make history. Spotify announced on Instagram that the 2020 hit has officially become the platform's first song to reach 5 billion streams.
Spotify's record follows another significant achievement: not too long ago, "Blinding Lights" topped Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century chart, which tracks songs from 2000 to 2024.
The song was released in November 2019 as the second single from The Weeknd's fourth studio album, After Hours. It spent four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became the first song to spend a full year in the top 10 on the chart. In January 2024, the song also became the first to reach 4 billion streams on Spotify. As of now, "Blinding Lights" is one of 28 songs by The Weeknd to enter Spotify's Billions Club.
