Cannes bans revealing clothing on the red carpet

The Cannes Film Festival will introduce new rules: a “dress code.” The festival will prohibit showing up in excessively revealing clothing, half-nakedness, or revealing clothing.

Although nudity was not officially permitted before, Cannes updated its dress code on the eve of the 78th festival, stating: “Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.”

While such bans are common in less glamorous venues, the change has received considerable attention, particularly in light of the recent spate of transparent and “naked” dresses, such as Bianca Sensori’s Grammy-winning look.

Cannes representatives explained that the new rules simply clarify long-standing principles.

“The goal is not to regulate clothing in general, but to prohibit complete nudity, by the institutional format of the festival and French law.” organizers said.

The festival also announced that voluminous dresses, especially those with long skirts that hinder guests’ movement and sitting, will also not be allowed.

Despite these strict rules, celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell, and Kendall Jenner have often worn revealing clothing.

It is also worth noting that Cannes banned selfies back in 2018; according to festival director Thierry Fremaux, they are “disgusting,” but many celebrities continue to take pictures on the palace steps today.

The festival will start today.
