The Islamic Republic of Iran supports any process that leads to the cessation of conflicts, the reduction of tensions, and the establishment of lasting stability, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said, Mehr news agency reported.
“Of course, this support is conditional and based on principles agreed upon by regional countries,” Mohajerani said. She stressed Tehran’s three unwavering principles: maintaining full sovereignty of countries over their territories, protecting the territorial integrity of all states, and resolute resistance to any changes in international borders, adding that the recent joint statement by Baku and Yerevan took these principles into account.
Mohajerani stressed that one of the main developments was the cancellation of the controversial so-called “Zangezur Corridor” project.
“The ‘corridor’ has been removed from the negotiating table and replaced with a transit route under the full sovereignty of Armenia, as claimed by the parties,” he said, describing the change as “positive and reasonable” as it both protects sovereignty and allows for economic cooperation.
However, the spokesperson warned that the entry of forces or players from outside the region into the Caucasus equation could have long-term negative consequences for peace and stability.
Mohajerani said Iran is ready to act as a “responsible neighbor and reliable partner” if the agreement protects sovereignty, stability, and regional cooperation.
