US significantly reduces its troop presence in Syria

The United States is closing three of its eight operational bases in northeastern Syria, reducing the number of American troops in the country from 2,000 to 1,400, The New York Times reported, citing two senior American officials.

The newspaper specified that the Mission Support Site Green Village, MSS Euphrates bases, and another, much smaller facility are being closed. According to the NYT, American commanders must decide whether to reduce the number of troops further in 60 days.

Experts have recommended leaving at least 500 American soldiers in Syria, but US President Donald Trump has “expressed deep skepticism” about keeping any American troops in the country, the newspaper writes. He notes that the fall of the Bashar Assad regime has reduced the number of threats in Syria “at least for now.”
