Germany's population is older on average than it was 70 years ago, while the rate of increase in life expectancy has slowed. If in 1950, the proportion of residents aged 65 and over was about 10%, then in 2021 it reached 22%. Reports the Federal Statistical Service.
The aging of the German population is also significantly affected by the sharp decline in the birth rate in the country. This trend is offset by migration. Last year, according to preliminary data, the most significant increase in migration since 1950 was recorded: 1.5 million people, mainly refugees from Ukraine. Every year since 1950, more people have moved to Germany than emigrated. This paved the way for the so-called birth deficit, since every year since 1972, more people have died than were born in Germany.
