The cases of inhumane treatment of Armenian prisoners of war in Azerbaijan were presented to the President of the ICRC

On September 21, RA Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan met Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), within the framework of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

Presenting the consequences of Azerbaijan's recent aggression against RA sovereignty and territorial integrity, Minister Mirzoyan noted that Azerbaijan's criminal actions were accompanied by intentional targeting of the civilian population and infrastructure and gross violations of international and humanitarian law.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs particularly emphasized the need to strictly condemn cases of inhumane treatment of Armenian service members and prisoners of war, including torture and other war crimes against female service members. In this context, it was noted that the international community's failure to condemn Azerbaijan's war crimes and belligerent behavior and leave them unpunished makes the aggressor more reckless, opening the way for new crimes.

The head of the foreign political department of Armenia highly appreciated the activity of the ICRC aimed at responding to problems related to the return of Armenian prisoners of war and hostages in Azerbaijan, search operations for missing persons, and other issues of a humanitarian nature.
